Abstract:
Emma Pollard and Joy Oakley (Institute for Employment Studies) present findings from Creative Career Stories. This is the third report from the Creative Graduates Creative Futures project – the largest longitudinal study of the early careers of practice-based creative arts graduates. The workshop will draw on the follow-up qualitative research with graduates one year on from the main study that captured personal reflections on career journeys. The workshop will provide further insights into creative careers some five to seven years after graduation. It will explore the connections graduates make between their courses and careers; and present perspectives on how careers evolve, career facilitators and key influences, the challenges graduates face, and how the recession impacts upon graduates’ work and lives. The findings bring to the fore the challenges for both higher education and the creative sector in recognising and valuing the contribution of graduates to the creative economy.
The workshop provided an opportunity to discuss these challenges and the implications for preparing these highly skilled and motivated graduates for entry to the sector and for building sustainable careers.
